The first week back to our park in the valley I lost part of a tooth. It's a back tooth which I need so, I'm assuming I need a root canal and a crown. I had the same thing happen last winter to two teeth. Hard headed as I am, I wouldn't spend the thousands of dollars to get those teeth crowned. I found a dentist online and she turned out to be good and had a great personality. Even with her great way with her patients, she couldn't talk me into the root canals and crowns. I talked her into pulling one and filling the other. So, now one is gone and the other, which she filled, is sensitive when I chew on that side.
Okay, this year I will have to bite the bullet and have these last two back teeth fixed.
But wait!! Maybe I could go to Mexico, and get these teeth fixed at half the cost. Oh no, probably not a good idea. The media often talk about the shootings, drug cartels, kidnapings, and other violence in Mexico.
So, I thought, just spend $3,000 or more to save these teeth so you can chew steak. Then I remembered the dental clinic near Mount Vernon, Missouri, on I-44 where many rver's stop going and coming from their winter destinations. Maybe I would wait til spring and make an appointment there. Well, for a variety of personal reasons regarding our spring schedule, I began to waiver on that.
In the meantime, while drinking coffee with a friend here, he mentioned going to "Progreso" to get dental work done soon. Oh my, thoughts raced through my head once more. Maybe I could do the Mexico dentist trip. After all, our good friend Carole had made the dental trek a few years ago. If she could, why couldn't I? Is it really that dangerous?
After much conversation with locals, research online, driving down to the border to check the route, and finding "Mexico Mike" at his website,
https://www.mexicomike.com › dentists
We have appointments at Universal Dental. Mike has helped me to overcome my anxiety about crossing the border. He and my research have convinced me there is no gang of bandidos waiting there to snag me.
Thankfully we did not see these guys. We felt comfortable and very welcome as we entered Mexico and crossed the Rio Grande River bridge.
Well, it is Tuesday, 11/24/15. We went to the dentist in Nuevo Progresso, this morning. We were 45 minutes early but did not have to wait. Sharon saw Karina Garcia and had her teeth cleaned for $25. I saw Dr Gilbert and had a tooth prepped for a crown. Dr Gilbert did not think I would need a root canal. He removed the old filling and cleaned it up before adding the temporary cap. I go back for the crown next week and pay at that time, $200.
We both got along fine. Sharon thought her cleaning was just like in the USA. I liked Dr Gilbert very well. He is Hispanic but speaks good English, explained what he was doing and any options very well. We would both recommend Universal Dental to any of our family and friends.
There is a large parking lot at the bridge. Park all day for $2.00. We walked across the bridge and went one block to Universal Dental. Mexico doesn't seem to care who comes in. No papers are required. You must have a passport to come back to the USA. We left our campground north of Edinburg at 9:00 am, and were in the dentist chair by 10:20 am.
Chalk up one more adventure for this fun seeking senior couple.
We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. We know we are blessed to have you all in our lives.
WHEREVER YOU ARE IN YOUR LIFE AND TRAVELS, ENJOY THE JOURNEY.
